Emily Maxwell begins her first year as assistant coach for the Transylvania cross country and track and field programs for the 2019-20 seasons.
Maxwell comes to the Pioneers from Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and will serve as both an assistant coach with the Transylvania cross country team and specialize is distance running with the Transylvania indoor and outdoor track and field teams.
“I am truly excited to have Emily join our staff here at Transylvania,” said Roden. “She brings a wealth of experience at various levels competing at the NCAA Division I, NAIA and post-collegiate levels. These experiences have allowed her to better relate more closely to all type of athletes as a coach. More impressively is her understanding of the sport and ability to transfer this knowledge into detailed training methods to suit the individual athletes on our team. All of this, mixed with her passion for the sport, will help us as we strive to reach new heights as a team and help our athletes reach their full potential.”
“I am really excited to be joining the Transylvania track and field and cross country programs and to begin this upcoming season,” added Maxwell. “Cross country is the sport that I have always been most passionate about as an athlete and I see a lot of Pioneers that share that same enthusiasm. This team has so much energy and camaraderie already and I feel confident that their bond will only grow as the workouts get tougher and they experience a few meets together.”
Maxwell completed a decorated career as a student-athlete at Point Park University in 2015 where she competed in the NAIA Cross Country National Championship. During her collegiate career, Maxwell was part of a team that captured the KIAC Conference Championship in her final season and set the school record in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase.
Following her collegiate racing days, Maxwell has built a career as a personal trainer for athletes in a variety of settings, ranging from 800-meter races to 25-kilometer mountain races. Maxwell has been involved in an array of coaching and administrative endeavors, including as an assistant coach for the Girls on the Run program in conjunction with the Magee Women’s Hospital and serving with the Elite Athlete Staff with P3R as part of the 2019 USATF Half Marathon Championships.
Maxwell plans to apply her versatility across both the cross country and track and field programs at Transylvania. “I have 10 years under my belt as a student of this sport and have experienced very high highs and low lows. I wouldn’t trade in any of the moments as I feel they are essential to understanding the student-athlete experience, and give me an ability to step back at any time, really evaluate how the athletes are doing on a number of levels, and make adjustments as needed.”
