Pioneers take down Centre in three straight to move to 6-0 on the season

LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Transylvania University volleyball team continued its winning streak Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over in-state rival Centre College at the Clive M. Beck Center.

With the win, the Pioneers extend the program record for consecutive wins to open the season.

"Our serving was again very direct and offensive," head coach Kyle Walton said. "That allows us to do a lot of things blocking that we haven't been able to do in the past."

The Pioneers closed the opening set on a 14-5 run to take the first set and never looked back. Marissa Coutinho and Audrey Brown were all over the floor for the Pioneers. The duo combined for 31 of the team's 50 digs on the night limiting the Colonels to a .182 hitting percentage.

"We had great performances from Maddie and Katelyn that we hope to build on as the season grows," Walton said. "Marissa was really a defensive spark for us all night and kept the ball off the ground and allowed us to dig and kill very well."

Offensively, the Pioneers were led by senior Erin Romito who posted a match-high 17 kills, while Maddie Lovern added nine kills and Katelyn Maller and Jennifer Buckman chipped in eight kills each.

"It was a great team win tonight and there was nothing better than to do it in front of their peers that came out in full force."

Transy (6-0) travels to Illinois Wesleyan this weekend for the Illinois Wesleyan Barker Tournament.
