BEREA, Ky. –The Pioneers were impressive in their season opener, as the Transylvania University volleyball team swept homestanding Berea College in three straight sets Tuesday at the Seabury Center.
Transylvania won by scores of 25-11, 25-12 and 25-10. The Pioneers controlled momentum early and remained in control the duration of the contest.
"I thought the kids came out with great energy and played with a purpose," head coach Kyle Walton said. "Erin Romito picked up right where she left off last year and our defense is what kept us steady."
Romito posted a match high nine kills in the win along with five service aces. Maddie Lovern added five kills, while Katelyn Maller chipped in three kills in the win.
"Our serving is something we will continue to build on after last season and tonight was a good night for the girls to see their work in action," Walton said. "It was a very productive preseason and it was great to get into the game setting so the girls could put it all together."
The Pioneers take on Spalding (Ky.) Friday night in their home opener. Friday's match is slated for 5 p.m.
