Rally in deciding set lifts Pioneers over Mount St. Joseph

CINCINNATI, Ohio—A timely 5-1 run in the deciding set lifted the Transylvania University volleyball team to a 3-2 win over Mount St. Joseph University Wednesday at the Harrington Center.

The Pioneers won by scores of 24-26, 25-23, 25-21, 19-25 and 17-15.

Trailing 14-12 in the deciding set, the Pioneers rallied for five of the final six points earning a pivotal Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win. Junior outside hitter, Erin Romito, launched one of her match-high 22 kills, to pull the Pioneers within one. A serve from Rachel D'Agnillo was misplayed giving another point to the Pioneers, before Romito and Becca Bryans added two more kills to lift Transylvania to the 3-2 win.

Transylvania controlled much of the first set, but could not hold off the Lions as Mount St. Joseph stole the set. The Pioneers held a 16-10 lead before the Lions pulled within three. Transylvania regained momentum and looked to take the first set with a five point advantage, 24-19, but the Lions claimed the set thanks to seven straight points.

The Pioneers led all but three points in the second set on their way to a 25-23 win to tie the match at one apiece. D'Agnillo sparked the Pioneers in the third set helping Transylvania take an early 6-1 lead that proved to be too much for the Lions to overcome.

Mount St. Joseph, however, answered with win in the fourth set to force the fifth and deciding set but the Pioneers earned their crucial third conference win of the season.

Romito added 17 digs, along with her match-high 22 kills. Berkleigh Brogan tallied 42 assists with 11 digs, as Erin Hoffman logged 31 digs in the win.
