Smith Mountain Lake, Va. – Malauri Edwards finished near the head of the pack for the Transylvania triathlon team with a fifth-place finish in the Division III race at the East Regional Qualifier on Saturday afternoon.
Racing against other NCAA Division III schools including Trine University, North Central College, Millikin Uniersity, Eastern Mennonite University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Concordia University Wisconsin, and Calvin College, Edwards finished in fifth place among a field of 48 individuals to cross the finish line in 1:09:04 in the sprint format triathlon.
Edwards' performance marked the fourth straight time the freshman has finished in the top-five to begin her collegiate triathlon career. Edwards had the second-fastest run segment of any racer to help close her race on a tear, completing the third portion of the race in 20:17. Edwards' teammate, Kiarah Higgins, completed the swim portion of the race and turned in a time of 20:10.
Saturday's race was held as part of the larger Kinetic Cup Triathlon Festival, an event with an emphasis on regional collegiate competition and contained races for Division I, Division II, and Division III schools.
The race serves as the final race of the 2019 regular season for the Pioneers, who now look ahead to the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships in Tempe, Arizona on Saturday, November 16.
