Lexington, Ky. – Transylvania track and field head coach Taylor Throckmorton has announced the addition of former collegiate track and field standout Matthew Roden as assistant throws coach, effective for the 2018-19 season.

"I feel extremely fortunate to bring Coach Roden on to our staff here at Transylvania University," remarked Throckmorton. "Coach Roden has a proven history of developing talent and providing a top-notch experience for his athletes. With his extensive background of coaching athletes across many levels, he will be instrumental in taking our throws program to the next level."

Roden comes to Transylvania from Division III Emory & Henry College in Virginia where he acted as the Track & Field Interim Head Coach during the spring of 2018.  During his time at Emory & Henry, Roden was instrumental in the creation of their track and field program and helped field a team that took part in the college's first collegiate outdoor season.

"I am thrilled to be a part of such a prestigious institution such as Transylvania University," said Roden. "The opportunity to help add to an already incredible student experience is exciting and I look forward to helping these young student-athletes exceed their goals and personal bests while creating memories that will last them a lifetime."

As an undergraduate, Roden competed at the NCAA Division I level while attending Coastal Carolina University and later at UNC-Wilmington.  While at Coastal Carolina, Roden earned the 2002 Big South Conference Championship in the hammer throw. After transferring to UNC-Wilmington, Roden won the Colonial Athletic Association Championship for the hammer in 2005.

During his collegiate years, Roden twice qualified for the NCAA Division I East Regional Championships and was named a NCAA Division I All-East Region performer in 2005.  He currently holds the UNCW school record in the hammer throw.

Roden is a 2005 graduate of UNC-Wilmington where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Management. He also received his Master of Science in Sport Management with a concentration in Intercollegiate Athletic Administration from the California University of Pennsylvania in 2009.

Additionally, Roden boasts a pair of certifications from USA Track & Field, including a Level I and Level II Coach certification (Throws).
