Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's tennis team completed a perfect 3-0 weekend in team play with a 6-3 win over the LaGrange College Panthers on Sunday afternoon at Top Seed Tennis Club in the inaugural Transylvania Invitational.
After beating Ohio Northern and Roanoke the previous day, the Pioneers still had plenty in the tank on Sunday, capturing two wins in doubles play and four more in singles competition.
Porsche Robinson and Jessica Burton delivered a straightforward 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles and Merrick Irwin and Christina Duvall grinded out an 8-6 win in the No. 2 singles spot. Erin Biddle and Callie Messinger were outstretched 8 to 5 by Hannah Miller and Makayla Red in the No. 3 doubles spot, translating to a 2-1 Transy lead after the doubles portion of play.
Robinson added a third match in the Pioneers' favor with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Nicole Phillips in No. 1 singles and Burton delivered a nearly identical result with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Ansley Moody in the No. 2 matchup.
Irwin took care of matters over Madison Kady in No. 3 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0, and Duvall also roared to victory against Callaway Cook in No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph.
Burton and Robinson each went 6-0 for the weekend to help the Pioneers begin their spring season on the right foot; Transylvania was one of the earliest teams in the country to clinch an NCAA Tournament berth by winning last fall's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament and thus, the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
The Pioneers will continue working towards the May national championships on Saturday, February 29 as they visit Covenant College. Opening serve will take place at 11:00 a.m. Eastern time.
