Robinson and Burton power Transylvania women's tennis past Ohio Northern and Roanoke on Saturday

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's tennis team opened the spring 2020 season with a pair of victories at the Transylvania Invitational at Top Seed Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers opened the day with a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears before rolling to an 8-1 over the Roanoke College Maroons in the evening match.

Despite an 8-3 victory by the duo of Jessica Burton and Porsche Robinson in the No. 1 doubles matchup, the Pioneers fell behind the Polar Bears 2-1 following doubles play.

Both Burton and Robinson, as well as Christina Duvall picked up singles victories to even the match score at 4-4.

In the deciding No. 2 singles match, Transylvania's Sheila Cetina battled Ohio Northern's Olivia Schrager to a 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) victory, clinching the 5-4 win for Transylvania.

In Transylvania's second match of the day, the Pioneers jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead over Roanoke following doubles play.

In the singles' matches, Robinson, Burton, Cetina, and Duvall each picked up convincing victories to put the Pioneers in control of the matchup.

Merrick Irwin picked up a victory at No. 4 singles to cap off the 8-1 match victory for Transylvania over Roanoke.

Both Burton and Robinson posted perfect 4-0 records in the pair of matches on Saturday.

The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow for the third and final day of the Transylvania Invitational. Transylvania will face off against the LaGrange College Panthers at 7:00 p.m. at the Top Seed Tennis Club.
