Transylvania women's tennis starts HCAC Tournament with 5-0 quarterfinal win over Mount St. Joseph

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's tennis team marched into the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals with a resounding 5-0 match win over the Mount St. Joseph University Lions in Friday evening's 2019 HCAC quarterfinal match at Top Seed Tennis Club.

The tournament No. 3 seed Pioneers disposed of the No. 6 seed Lions in their second meeting of the season with a three-match sweep in doubles play. In the following set of singles matches, Alyssa Igyarto became the first Pioneer to complete her conquest in No. 5 singles play and was followed shortly by a victory from Jessica Burton in No. 3 singles to conclude a dominant 80-minute team performance.

Transylvania advances into the semifinal round of the HCAC Tournament where the Pioneers will face tournament No. 2 seed Hanover College on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the indoor courts of Top Seed Tennis Club.

The Pioneers built an early lead in doubles play with a victory at No. 1 doubles by Porsche Robinson and Jessica Burton, who took an 8-1 lead over Hannah Broermann and Blake Nelson.

Alyssa Igyarto and Christina Duvall teamed up in No. 3 doubles, matching Burton and Robinson with an 8-1 victory. Merrick Irwin and Sheila Cetina finished up the doubles sweep in No. 2 doubles play with an 8-2 win to push the Pioneers two wins away from victory.

Igyarto raced to a 6-0, 6-1 win in singles play over Kelsey Knodel to bring the Pioneers to the brink of victory. Jessica Burton pitched a flawless match in the No. 3 spot for a 6-0, 6-0 win over Erin Kallmeyer to wrap up the night for the Pioneers.

Tomorrow's semifinals will serve as the second meeting of the season for the Pioneers and Panthers; Hanover won the first matchup 6-3 in Hanover, Indiana on October 10. The Pioneers are aiming for their second straight appearance in the HCAC Tournament championship match with a potential win in tomorrow's semifinals.
