Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's tennis team wrapped up Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 5-4 loss to the Anderson University Ravens at the Top Seed Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The matchup saw two of the best teams in the HCAC battle right to the end, with each side possessing a chance to claim victory coming down to the final pair of singles matches. "That was a great college tennis match that went all the way to the wire," remarked Transylvania head coach Bill Carey.
Leading the Ravens 2-1, Transylvania opened singles play with a pair of victories by Cetina and Burton in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches.
However, the Ravens came storming back to claim victories at No. 1, No. 4, and No. 5 singles to escape Lexington with the 5-4 match victory.
The loss drops the Pioneers' record to 6-3 on the season and 6-2 in the HCAC while the Ravens improve to 11-1 overall and a perfect 7-0 in league play.
The Pioneers will now turn their attention to the HCAC Tournament, which begins on Friday, October 18, at the Top Seed Tennis Complex. Transylvania will open the tournament as the No. 3 seed and matchup against the No. 6 seeded Mount St. Joseph University Lions. The match between the Pioneers and the Lions is set for a 6:00 p.m. start in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
