Lexington, Ky. - The Transylvania swimming and diving team continued to fashion a strong start to the 2019-20 campaign with a compelling 344-152 dual meet victory over the Anderson University Ravens at the William T. Young Campus Center on Saturday afternoon.
Transylvania was dominant across both the men's and women's events on Saturday as the Pioneers claimed victories in 22 of the meet's 32 races. The Transylvania women's team defeated Anderson 197-71 while the men's team claimed a 147-81 victory over the Ravens.
On the women's side, the Pioneers opened the day with their second-straight victory in the 200 medley relay event. The Transylvania relay team, which featured Sarah Haerle, Sami Monarch, Sophie Ritzenthaler, and Lindsey Seaton, completed the race in a time of 1:57.71, nearly five seconds ahead of Anderson.
Haerle used her victory in the relay to springboard into wins in the women's 100 breaststroke (1:13.00), the women's 200 breaststroke (2:38.33), and the women's 200 individual medley (2:23.94).
Mattie Fogle also turned in numerous victories for the Pioneers on Saturday, including a first-place finish in the women's 1000 freestyle. The senior defeated her foe from Anderson by over 20 seconds with a time of 11:45.15. Fogle also claimed victory in the women's 500 freestyle with a time of 5:43.80.
Fogle's final victory of the day came in the 200 freestyle relay as she teamed with Monarch, Seaton, and Benton Patrick to post a time of 1:47.98.
Leading the way for the Transylvania men's team was Drew Dodds, who claimed four first-place finishes on Saturday. Dodds, along with Kigen Chemirmir, Connor Hood, and Devon Parker, raced to a victory in the men's 200-medley relay with a time of 1:43.32. Individually, Dodds claimed victories in the men's 100 breaststroke (1:02.97), the men's 200 breaststroke (2:19.64), and the men's 200 individual medley (2:08.63).
Bolstering the results on the men's side was Ben Smith, who tallied three first-place finishes on Saturday. The sophomore's most impressive showing came in the men's 500 freestyle, where Smith claimed victory with a time of 5:26.85, nearly 10 seconds faster than the second-place swimmer from Anderson. Smith was also victorious in the men's 200 freestyle (1:53.76), and the men's 100 freestyle (52.14).
Up next for the Pioneers is a trip to Barbourville, Kentucky, on Friday, November 15, for a dual meet against the Union College Bulldogs. The meet is set for a 6:00 p.m. start at the Union College Center for Health & Learning.
