Swimming & Diving squads begin second half push vs Bellarmine

Louisville, KY – Resuming their season from the winter break, the Transylvania University swimming and diving teams ventured to Louisville for a dual meet with the Bellarmine University Knights this past Saturday.

As the Pioneers tried to shake off the rust from a long competitive respite, the Knights emerged victorious over visiting Transylvania in men's and women's competition at the meet held at Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center in Louisville.

Transylvania's swimming and diving head coach Keaton Koukis drew upon many positives from the trip out west to Louisville.

"With this being our teams' first meet back from a long winter break and our training trip down to Florida, I was proud of our performance," reflected Koukis following the meet.

While it was the host team who earned the team win, Transylvania furnished a considerable amount of key performers in Saturday's meet. Sophomore Edward Freeman raced to a fast finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning the event. Freeman added to that performance with a third place finish in the 100-yard freestyle to capture more points for Transy.

Senior Sam Mullen captured a win in the 200-yard backstroke, edging out Luke Dobson of Bellarmine and teammate Cameron Brewer for a photo finish.

It was a solid afternoon for Transylvania's youth movement as freshman Kiali Jelinek picked up a victory in the women's 200-yard individual medley. Jelinek and junior Morgan Cyrus posted a 1-2 finish in the event to cap off a productive day for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers' swimming and diving squads will aim to capitalize upon the momentum fostered this weekend as they look ahead to their next meet, the HCAC Invite hosted by Franklin College of Franklin, Indiana this Saturday.

Koukis's outlook on the upcoming event in Franklin was expectant, saying "this is our last push before we prepare and rest for our conference meet (in a month from now), so we will be working hard to train through our last two dual meets."

Action begins at the Franklin Community High School on Saturday, January 25 at 1 p.m.. Transylvania will lock horns with conference foes Defiance, Franklin, and Rose-Hulman in the meet.
