LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Transylvania University men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Union College with a combined score of 244-233 Saturday at the William T. Young Campus Center.
Transylvania tallied 12 first-place finishes, as the women's team topped the Bulldogs 138-112. Union College, however, edged Transylvania 121-106 in men's competition.
The Pioneers opened the meet with back-to-back first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay.The relay team of Julia Johnson, Morgan Cyrus, Meghan Taylor and Kiali Jelinek posted a time of 1:53.96 to take first-place in the first event of the meet. The men's team of E.J. Quijano, Sam Mullen, Fernando Zarate and Edward Freeman also took first-place in the event.
Kristen Cornish, Elizabeth Davis, Anna Balassa and Sarah Hernandez added first-place points for the Pioneers with a time of 4:02.36 in the 400-yard free relay. Meanwhile, Hannah Jelinek logged a 1:70.32 in the women's one-meter dive earning first-place for the Pioneers.
Taylor posted first-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke and the 50-yard freestyle. Johnson racked up first-place finishes in the 200-yard fly, 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley.
Quijano dominated the men's 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke taking first-place in both events. Zarate added a first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:06.07.
The Pioneers are back in action Dec. 6 at the Transylvania Invitational. The meet will be held at the University of Kentucky's Lancaster Aquatic Center.
