Lexington, Ky. – Abby Baker and Meron Roach each recorded a brace as the Transylvania women's soccer team powered past the Manchester University Spartans in a 6-1 overpowering at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Pioneers' record improves to 4-6-2 and 2-0-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference while the Spartans fall to 0-12 on the year and 0-3 in league play.
In addition to her two goals on Saturday, Baker also tallied a pair of assists for a total of six points on the day. The sophomore now leads the HCAC with seven goals on the season and ranks second in the conference with 18 total points.
Baker put the Pioneers ahead in the 12th minute with her first goal of the day, set up on an assist from Alli Kling.
After an equalizer by the Spartans and a Manchester own goal, the Pioneers extended their lead to 3-1 when Roach converted her fifth goal of the season just before the halftime break.
Less than 30 seconds into the second half, Roach and Baker connected to extend the Pioneers' lead to 4-1 over the Spartans. Then, in the 57th minute, Baker sent a pass up towards Morgan Fowler, who blasted a shot past the Spartans' goalkeeper for her first career goal, stretching the hometown lead to 5-1.
The Pioneers' final strike came in the 67th minute when a pass from Baker set up Roach for her second goal of the day which pushed the final score to 6-1 in favor of Transylvania
The Pioneers will continue their current homestand when they welcome the Mount St. Joseph University Lions to Lexington on Wednesday, October 16. First touch between the Pioneers and the Lions is set for 7:00 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium.
