Danville, Ky. – The Transylvania women's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking 15-14 loss to the Centre College Colonels at South Turf Field on Wednesday night.
Trailing Transylvania 14-13 with just over two minutes remaining in the game, the Colonels came charging back to score two late goals and escape with the one-goal victory.
The loss drops Transylvania's record to 7-3 on the season while the Colonels' record improves to 10-2 overall.
The Colonels jumped out to a 4-2 lead 12 minutes into the game, but the Pioneers responded with a 5-0 run fueled by two goals apiece from Johnston and Brianna McCulley, along with a goal by Salem Carlow, giving the Pioneers a 7-4 lead.
After a three-goal run by Centre evened the score at 7-7, Pontious scored her third goal of the night to give Transylvania an 8-7 lead at the halftime break.
The Colonels and Pioneers battled throughout the second half with each side searching for control of the game, but with less than five minutes remaining in the game, the score was even at 13-13.
Johnston scored off a setup pass from McCulley to put Transylvania ahead by one with just 3:25 left on the clock. However, Centre ended the game with two straight goals to prevail by the final score of 15-14.
Mackenzie Dent picked up the loss in net for Transylvania, allowing 15 goals while tallying nine saves in 60 minutes of action.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Tuesday, April 2 as they travel to Anderson, Indiana to open Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference play with a game against the Anderson University Ravens. Opening draw between the Pioneers and Ravens is set for 6:00 p.m. at Macholtz Stadium.
