Lexington, Ky. – The No. 10/13 Transylvania women's basketball team roared to its sixth straight conference victory to begin Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 75-46 win over the Defiance College Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon at the Beck Center.
The Pioneers used a 29-7 blitz in the opening quarter to secure a cushy lead for the duration of the afternoon before implanting a firm defensive stand over the final half-hour of play for their ninth consecutive overall win.
Transylvania improved to 12-1 on the season and 6-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 4-9 overall and 3-3 in the HCAC.
Shelby Boyle used another signature explosive first quarter to boost the Pioneers to their nearly wire-to-wire win, scoring 10 of her game-high 18 points in the opening period on 4-for-6 shooting. The senior added five rebounds, two steals, and two assists on a 50 percent shooting from the floor and from behind the arc for the afternoon.
Behind Boyle's offense and a sizable advantage in turnover margin, the Pioneers scored the final 24 points of the first quarter to claim a 29-7 advantage after one. The Pioneers claimed six steals in the first quarter against zero takeaways by the Yellow Jackets and shot 61 percent from the floor to Defiance's 27-percent shooting figure.
Both teams went cold over the first five minutes of the second quarter before the Pioneers began to connect again from outside. Transy used a buzzer-beating fast break on a feed from Kennedi Stacy to Boyle to grab a 42-19 halftime lead.
The Pioneers shot a sizzling 54 percent from the floor in the third quarter as six different players scored on the way to a 61-35 lead at the end of the period.
The Pioneers outshot the Yellow Jackets 45 percent to 32 percent and hit 9 of 26 three-pointers on the afternoon compared to 6 of 20 makes from outside by Defiance. Transylvania held a 45-29 advantage on the glass and scored 33 points off of 19 Yellow Jacket turnovers.
Ashton Woodard added 11 points, three rebounds, one assist, and one steal for the Pioneers while Zenoviah Walker tallied nine points, five rebounds, four assists, and one steal while knocking down 3 of 6 triples.
Transylvania returns to play on Wednesday, hosting the Hanover College Panthers in the first meeting of the regular season between the two rivals. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. from the Beck Center.
