No. 10/13 Transylvania women show off physicality in home win vs. Franklin

Lexington, Ky. – A dominant second-quarter performance by the No. 10/13 Transylvania women's basketball team led to an 84-50 victory for the Pioneers over the Franklin College Grizzlies at the Beck Center on Wednesday night.

The win propels the Pioneers' record to 11-1 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference while the Grizzlies fall to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in league play.

The Pioneers capitalized upon their size advantage over the Grizzlies throughout the evening for a strong showing in the interior; Transylvania outrebounded Franklin 57-32 for the game and blocked 11 shots in comparison to just one rejection by the Grizzlies.

Leading the way for Transylvania was Zenoviah Walker, who scored a season-high 15 points on a 6-for-8 shooting performance

Also scoring in double figures for the Pioneers were Ashton Woodard, who added 13 points and eight rebounds, and Kennedi Stacy, who also scored 13 points to go along with nine rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

The Pioneers and Grizzlies battled throughout a physical first quarter that saw Walker score five early points. Later in the quarter, Shelby Boyle erupted for five straight points in less than 20 seconds to give Transylvania a 20-10 lead.

Early in the second quarter, Walker converted back-to-back layups and drained a three-point jumper to push the Transylvania lead to 30-15 over Franklin.

The Pioneers fully turned on the jets with just over four minutes remaining in the half when Grace Shope knocked down Transylvania's sixth 3-pointer of the game, extending the Pioneers' lead to 38-17. Shope finished the game with nine points on 3-for-5 shooting from three-point range.

With just seconds remaining in the first half, Walker received an inbound pass and pushed the ball ahead to Dasia Thornton, who laid a shot up and in just ahead of the buzzer to give Transylvania a 46-20 lead at the half. Transylvania outscored Franklin 25-7 in the second quarter.

Leading the Grizzlies 70-40 at the start of the fourth quarter, Stacy guided the Pioneers to the conference victory with 10 points and three rebounds in the final 10 minutes of play.

The Pioneers will look to extend their current winning streak to nine straight games when they host the Defiance College Yellow Jackets on Saturday, January 11. Tip-off between the Pioneers and the Yellow Jackets is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Beck Center.
