No. 15 Transylvania women stay undefeated on the road with 20-point win at Bluffton

Bluffton, Ohio – The No. 15 Transylvania women's basketball team opened up the 2020 portion of its schedule with a towering 67-47 win over the Bluffton University Beavers on Saturday afternoon at the Sommer Center.

Shelby Boyle erupted for 16 of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter to set the tone for the Pioneers, who gradually pulled away in the first half from Bluffton to cruise to a 4-0 start in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play and a 10-1 overall record. Bluffton dropped to 8-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

The Pioneers grew their season-high win streak to seven games to complement an impressive start in conference competition. All four conference wins have come by double-digits while Saturday's victory was the third in conference play by 20 points or more.

Boyle connected on all four of her three-point attempts and shot 6 for 7 from the field overall as part of her first-quarter outburst. Zenoviah Walker sent home a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the Pioneers a 21-15 lead after one quarter.

Boyle passed off the scoring baton to her fellow senior Ashton Woodard, who registered 10 of her 12 points in the second quarter, hitting two 3-point buckets along the way to extend Transylvania's halftime lead to 42-25.

The Pioneers hit 8 of 16 three-point baskets in the first half to complement their 50 percent shooting figure from the floor overall.

The third quarter started off ice cold for both teams as Bluffton outscored Transylvania 3-2 in the first three and a half minutes before Grace Shope responded with a pair of triples to extend Transylvania's lead to 50-29. Transylvania outscored Bluffton for the third straight quarter, winning the third period 15-11. The Pioneers limited Bluffton to just two field goals in the third quarter as the Beavers shot a paltry 15 percent from the floor.

Transylvania held Bluffton to just five field-goal makes in the second half and just 22 points in the final 20 minutes.

Transylvania connected on 11 of 26 three-point field goals for a 42-percent figure while forcing Bluffton to 5 for 26 shooting from downtown. The Pioneers won the battle on the glass, 48-33.  

The Pioneers remain undefeated in road and neutral site games, improving to 6-0 away from the Beck Center.

Transylvania returns to play on Wednesday, January 8, hosting the Franklin College Grizzlies at the Clive M. Beck Center in Lexington. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
