Pioneers' offense slowed at Rose-Hulman despite Cox's double-double

Transy 56 Rose Hulman 68

Terre Haute, Ind. – The Transylvania women's basketball team's 11-game win streak came to an end at the hands of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin' Engineers Saturday afternoon as the host Engineers defeated Transy 68-56 at Hulbert Arena.

The Pioneers fell to 9-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play while the Engineers improved to 12-0 in conference competition, sweeping the regular-season series against the Pios.

Transylvania moved into a tie with Bluffton for second place in the HCAC standings, but hold the tiebreaker against Bluffton with six games to go in conference play.

Saturday's loss for the Pioneers came despite a strong performance from senior forward Rachel Cox, who notched her third double-double of the season with 20 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.

Transylvania endured a 10-0 deficit to open the game and spent the rest of the afternoon battling back in a physical contest with a defensive pace. Senior guard Sarah Ashley buried a three-pointer on Transy's final possession of the first quarter to cut Rose-Hulman's lead to 18-10.

The second quarter was low-scoring as well, but sophomore guard Shelby Boyle hit three clutch triples in the period to cut Rose-Hulman's lead to 24-20 before the Engineers eventually took a 30-23 advantage to the halftime break.

Transylvania's offense cooled off in the third quarter as they scored 12 points while the Engineers grew their lead back to double figures.

In the fourth quarter, Boyle went for another nine points, but Rose-Hulman continued to have success on close-range shots as they relied on a high-efficiency game to close out the win.

The Engineers shot 41 percent from the field while holding Transylvania to 35 percent shooting on the day. Both teams shot well from the free throw line with each side hitting 19 free throws apiece.

Transylvania continues its road trek on Wednesday, January 31 as it visits the Earlham College Quakers in Richmond, Indiana. Tipoff between the Pioneers and Quakers is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Schuckman Court.
