Transylvania softball splits at Mount St. Joseph in HCAC opener

Cincinnati, Ohio – The Transylvania softball team opened Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play by splitting a pair of games with the Mount St. Joseph University Lions at Kinder Morgan Field on Wednesday night.

The Pioneers were led by Shelby Gambrell, who went 4-for-8 at the plate with three RBI and two runs, along with her first home run of the season.

Taking the ball for Transylvania in game one was Kameron Bowling. The sophomore scattered five hits, tallied four strikeouts, and allowed just one earned run in seven innings of work.

The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a Transylvania throwing error. However, the Pioneers responded with a trio of runs in the top of the fifth.

Then, in the top of the seventh, Meg Liter sent her second home run of the season over the fence, extending Transylvania's lead to 4-1. The Pioneers added another insurance run in the seventh when Becca Messing doubled to centerfield, scoring Gambrell.

The Lions were only able to muster one run in the bottom of the seventh, allowing the Pioneers to take the 5-2 victory in game one.

Mount St. Joseph came charging back in game two as the Lions unleashed their offense to score five runs over the first three innings of play.

The Pioneers' offense came to life in the third when Gambrell sent her second double of the day into center field, scoring Brittany Mumford from second.

Trailing 5-1 in the seventh, Gambrell sent a two-run home run over the fence in left field, cutting the Mount St. Joseph lead to 5-3. However, the Pioneers were unable to create any additional offense, allowing the Lions to escape with the victory.  

With the split, Transylvania's record now moves to 11-7 overall and 1-1 in the HCAC while Mount. St. Joseph now boasts a record of 20-5 on the season and 1-1 in league play.

Up next for Transylvania is a two-game series with the Anderson University Ravens at home this Saturday, April 6. First pitch between the Ravens and Pioneers is set for 1:00 p.m. at Hall Field.
