Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's tennis team wrapped up its opening weekend of competition with a 9-0 loss to the Rhodes College Lynx at Top Seed Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon.

Despite the one-sided result, Transylvania head coach Kevin Calhoun was pleased with the efforts and performance of his team on Sunday.

"This weekend was tough as we went against national level competition," remarked Calhoun. "We are developing players who never backed down, and a culture of believing we belong in matches at this level. We have some things to improve on but we feel good about where we are."

The freshmen duo of Hugo Kouhkna and Nick McNamee provided the Pioneers with stellar performances early in the day as they dropped an 8-6 decision in the No. 2 doubles matchup.

In singles play, Transylvania freshman Arjun Gupta took an early lead in his No. 1 singles match before falling by the final score of 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7).

In the No. 3 singles matchup, Transylvania freshman Noah McNamee battled Alex Lloyd of Rhodes before eventually falling, 6-3, 6-3.

Up next for the Pioneers is an exhibition matchup against the Midway University Eagles on Friday, February 22. The match is set for a 4:00 p.m. start at the Thomas R. Post Tennis Complex in Midway, Kentucky.
