Transylvania men's soccer delivers fifth straight shutout to open up HCAC play at Defiance

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's soccer team remained perfect in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 2-0 victory over the Defiance College Yellow Jackets at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers broke open a scoreless match at the half with two second-half goals to make the difference for the road win.

With the win, Transylvania improves to 8-5 overall and 5-0 in the HCAC, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 7-7-2 overall and 2-2-1 in league play.

The scoreless affair continued into the second half until the 68th minute when Devin Craig sent a cross into the box that was deflected into the goal by a Defiance defender, giving Transylvania the 1-0 lead.

Then, in the 73rd minute, Transylvania extended its lead to 2-0 when Craig intercepted a pass, cut into the Yellow Jackets' penalty area, and drove a shot past the Defiance goalkeeper. 

The Pioneers' defensive line continued to suppress the Defiance offense over the final 17 minutes of play, allowing Transylvania to claim its fifth straight shutout victory.

The Pioneers have now outscored HCAC opponents 16-0 on the season.

Transylvania goalkeeper Drew Grisham collected seven saves on Saturday, earning his fourth shutout of the season. The senior currently ranks second in the HCAC with a .786% save percentage and third in conference with a 1.23 goals-against average.

Up next for Transylvania is a midweek showdown with the Hanover College Panthers on Wednesday, October 23, a matchup that pits two teams with combined HCAC records of 9-1. The match is set for a 3:30 p.m. start at the Hanover Soccer Complex.
