Altoona, Pa. – Charlie Wend recorded a brace and the Transylvania men's soccer team opened the 2019 season with a convincing 4-0 victory over the Penn State Altoona Lions at Spring Run Stadium on Friday night.
After a scoreless first half, the Pioneers' offense came to life early in the second half when Wend put a shot past the Lions' goalkeeper to gain the first lead of the game.
Eddy Andrade later doubled the Transylvania lead, scoring his first career goal in the 73rd minute of play.
Just moments later, Wend scored his second goal of the day to put the Pioneers ahead 3-0 off a setup pass from Mitchell Crispin.
Crispin concluded the Transylvania scoring efforts with his first career goal in the 87th minute after a beautiful setup pass from Luc Powell.
The Transylvania defensive unit smothered the Lions throughout the game, allowing just one shot on goal while the Pioneers offense manufactured 18 shots, nine of which were on frame.
The Pioneers will return to the pitch tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Huntingdon, Pennsylvania to take on the Juniata College Eagles. First touch between the Eagles and Transylvania is set for 3:00 p.m. at Gibbel Stadium.
