Colonels prevail over Transylvania men's lacrosse in Wednesday nonconference matchup

Buchart hustling upfield

Danville, Ky. – A critical third quarter proved the difference on Wednesday night as the Transylvania men's lacrosse team fell to the Centre College Colonels 14-11 at Farris Stadium.

Coming together as archrivals on Wednesday in a nonconference affair, the Pioneers and Colonels battled each other evenly to a 6-6 halftime tie before the Colonels went on to outscore Transylvania 5-1 in the third quarter to build a permanent lead for the rest of the night.

The Colonels moved to 8-3 on the year while the Pioneers dropped to 8-4 overall.

Corbyn Buchart led the Pioneers with a hat-trick and four points in all as part of a comeback effort in the fourth quarter that saw Transylvania reel off three straight goals to start the period and cut a Centre lead from 11-7 to 11-10. But the Colonels answered the Pioneers' comeback rally with three goals of their own in the final four and a half minutes of the match to secure the victory.

Three times in the first half did the Pioneers erase a Centre lead. Bryce Lowe got the Pioneers on the board in the first quarter with their first goal at the 9:43 mark while Trenton Sneed And Jack Stevenson scored back-to-back goals to put the Pioneers ahead of Centre, 3-2 by the 3:27 mark of the first quarter.

Centre fought back with three straight scores to take a 5-3 lead at the midway point of the second quarter before Buchart scored his first goal of the game on a man-down opportunity to bring the Pioneers within a goal with 7:46 left in the first half. Centre scored once more but Quinn Fox and Alex Cherry provided late scores to send Transylvania into the half with a 6-6 tie.

The third quarter belonged to Centre as the home team scored the first two goals out of the break. Nic Bailey stemmed the tide for Transy with a goal at the 9:15 mark, but the Colonels scored the final three goals of the quarter to take a four-goal lead to the final period of play.

Buchart kickstarted the rally with back-to-back goals to open the quarter for the Pioneers and Bailey scored for the second time on Wednesday with a goal at the 5:35 mark to accrue momentum for the visitors. But the Colonels had one more three-goal outburst in their arsenal to put the game out of reach.

Michael Webb collected 11 saves on the night for the Pioneers in taking the loss. Bailey finished with four points while Lowe was the other Pioneer to finish with a two-goal game. Peyton Bray and Bailey each had four ground balls.

Centre outgained the Pioneers 44-32 in ground balls while the Pioneers won the turnover margin by three. The Colonels mustered three more shots on goal than the Pioneers on Wednesday.

Transylvania returns to play on Saturday, April 6 when they visit the Mount St. Joseph Lions in Cincinnati, Ohio. The opening face-off is set for 1:00 p.m. from Schueler Field.
