Nashville, Tenn. – A consistent second half by the Transylvania men's lacrosse team was not enough to overcome a slow start as it fell to the Colorado College Tigers, 9-5 in its 2017 season opener at the Ensworth School Friday night.
The Pioneers weathered a quick and stunning 5-0 lead levied by Colorado College in the first quarter of action before asserting themselves the rest of the way. The Tigers took advantage of early transition opportunities and quick and patient strikes to build a quickly surging lead.
Goals from Colorado College's Tyler Borko and Coby Petau spotted the Tigers a 7-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The Pioneers recovered in an encouraging manner as the second half began, when Jack Stevenson scored the Pioneers' first goal of the 2017 season to start the half. The Tigers scored the next two goals for its final scores of the game before Transylvania scored four unanswered goals the rest of the way.
Five different Pioneers scored for the Pioneers, who dropped to 0-1 to begin the season; Josh Mesmer, Thompson Summers, Tommy Wegmiller, and Brad Clements were the other Pios to find the back of the net in the second half. Zach Roby and Brandon Heller came up with the Pioneers' two assists.
The Pioneers claimed 30 ground balls on the night; reigning Ohio River Men's Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Cooper Fogle, had seven saves in his senior season debut.
The Pioneers are next in action one week from today as they visit Sewanee: University of the South. Faceoff is set for 2:00 p.m. between Sewanee and Transylvania from Sewanee, Tennessee.
