North Bend, Ohio – The Transylvania men's golf team fought its way on Sunday to capture the team championship at the Mount St. Joseph Spring Invite at the Aston Oaks Golf Club.
Sitting in second place overall after round one Saturday, the Pioneers vaulted to a first-place finish on Sunday by firing a two-day score of 628 (313+315) to surge past Otterbein University (2nd place), Thomas More College, and Hanover College (T-3rd place).
The Pioneers were led by junior Carson Wattenbarger, who won the individual title in the event, firing a two day score of a one-under par 143 to pace the pack. Freshman Spencer McKinney shot a two-round score of 155 to finish in a tie for ninth place on the individual leaderboard and second among the Pioneers.
Senior Rob Canady followed closely behind McKinney to finish third on the Pioneers contingent as he shot a two-day 156. The Pioneers had all five players finish in the top-18 of the individual leaderboard as junior Clay Church fired off a 157, and sophomore Jack Berger finished tied for 18th individually with a 16-over par 160.
Sunday's event marked the first time in his career that Wattenbarger placed first at a collegiate event; Wattenbarger's two-round weekend was highlighted by an eagle and six birdies. Wattenbarger had the second-most amount of birdies among the field, and was third among all golfers with 24 pars. Berger led all golfers with 26 pars as the Pioneers put together their best collective performance thus far of the spring season.
Wattenbarger's performance was a headlining showcase on a weekend that saw the Pioneers finish above eight other teams in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and a field of 14 teams.
The Pioneers will next aim to continue their hot streak on April 1 and 2 when they venture to Terre Haute, Indiana for the Rose-Hulman Invitational. Both the Aston Oaks Golf Course in North Bend and the Hulman Links Golf Course will serve as the two sites for the 2017 HCAC Men's Golf Championships.
