Transylvania men's basketball falls to #6 Marietta in Don Lane Classic opener

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's basketball team opened the 2019 Don Lane Classic with a 107-61 loss to the No. 6 nationally-ranked Marietta College Pioneers at the Beck Center on Tuesday afternoon.

Luke Schroeder led the Pioneers with 12 points and six rebounds in 17 minutes of action. Gabe Schmitt added nine points, two rebounds, and two assists in the loss.

Marietta jumped out to an early 16-8 lead, but a deep three from Spencer McKinney cut the deficit to five points at the 13:55 mark of the first half.

Despite Transylvania's best efforts defensively, Marietta's ferocious offensive attack powered the Pioneers out to a 44-24 lead. However, Transylvania ended the half on a 6-0 run to cut the Marietta lead to 46-30 at the break. McKinney led the Pioneers with seven points in the opening half.

Marietta's offensive dominance continued into the second half as the Pioneers outscored Transylvania 61-30 in the Period.

For the game, Marietta outrebounded Transylvania 43-26 and held a 46-25 advantage in bench points.

With the loss, Transylvania's record falls to 5-3 on the year, while Marietta remains perfect on the season at 7-0.

Transylvania will be back in action tomorrow afternoon in the consolation game of the 2019 Don Lane Classic. The Pioneers will face off against the DePauw University Tigers, who fell to Albion in today's second game. Tip-off between the Pioneers and the Tigers is set for 1:00 p.m. from the Beck Center.
