Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's basketball team coasted to a 98-70 victory over the Huntingdon College Hawks at the Beck Center on Tuesday night in the first game of the Don Lane Classic presented by Kentucky Health Administrators thanks to some stifling defense and a record-setting performance from three-point range.
Transylvania was led in scoring by freshman forward Zachary Pulliam, who scored a career-high 22 points on 7-for-13 shooting from beyond the three-point arc in only 15 minutes of action. Pulliam and his fellow Pioneers combined to hit 20 three-point buckets in the game, believed to be a Transylvania record for most team triples in an individual contest.
In addition to the Pioneers' hot shooting, their smothering defensive pressure forced the Hawks into 23 turnovers in the game, compared to only 11 for Transylvania.
After quickly falling behind the Hawks 8 to 2, Coach Brian Lane went to his bench for a spark. Five new Pioneers came into the game with 16 minutes remaining in the half and quickly erased the early deficit. The second unit elevated the defensive intensity, and with 11 minutes remaining in the half a three-pointer by Schmitt gave the Pioneers the lead for good.
By hitting 11 three-pointers and forcing 12 turnovers in the first half. Transylvania carried a 54-33 lead into the break.
The second half played out similarly to the first as Transylvania extended its lead via continued hot shooting from three-point land. The Pioneers added nine more three-pointers on 45 percent shooting in the second half.
The lead would eventually swell to 83-49 on a layup by sophomore forward Bo Schuh with just over seven minutes remaining in the half. The teams would trade baskets over the game's final minutes, with the Pioneers eventually claiming the 98-70 victory.
The victory was a dominant team performance for Transylvania, as 14 players recorded double-digit minutes, and all 15 Pioneers that dressed out scored in the game. Sharing the ball was key to the Pioneers' success, as they recorded 26 assists on 37 made field goals.
The Pioneers will return to the court tomorrow afternoon to face the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears in the championship game of the Don Lane Classic presented by Kentucky Health Administrators. Tip-off between the Pioneers and the Polar Bears is set for 5:00 p.m. at the Beck Center.
