Mequon, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons pulled away from the Transylvania field hockey in the second half as the Pioneers dropped their regular-season finale, 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Tomasini Stadium.

The Pioneers completed their 2019 regular season with a record of 3-12 overall and 1-3 in Southern Athletic Association play after suffering the conference loss to the Falcons. Concordia gained its first win of SAA play to finish their season at 1-3 in conference play and 6-10 overall.

The first quarter featured plenty of action off the opening center pass. Concordia's Megan McPike christened the scoring with an opening goal less than two minutes into the contest for the first of her three goals on the day to give Concordia a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers bounced back quickly as they earned a penalty corner in the fifth minute of play. Harper Zeitz lashed in a hard shot from the left side to tie up the match at 1-1.

The rest of the half featured an offensive standstill as the defenses locked in, leading to a 1-1 halftime score.

Buoyed by 15 penalty corners earned in the second half, the Falcons began to pull away. McPike found the goal for her second score of the day midway through the third, giving the Falcons a 2-1 lead for what would eventually transpire as the game-winner. A backbreaking goal occurred at the end of the third as Concordia earned a penalty corner with one second left, and scored on a long shot from 15 yards out for a 3-1 advantage.

Concordia continued to heat up with three more goals over the fourth quarter as the home team secured its first home conference win of the season.

Varney handled 11 saves in goal for the Pioneers in defeat.

Sunday's result forces a three-way tie for third place in the SAA with Concordia University Wisconsin, Sewanee, and Transylvania each collecting wins against one of the other two teams. The Pioneers will be the No. 4 seed via the tiebreaker and will face No. 5 seed Sewanee in the SAA Tournament Quarterfinal on Friday, November 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium on the campus of Transylvania, the site of this year's 2019 SAA Tournament.
