Baltimore, Md. – The Transylvania field hockey team wrapped up its opening weekend trip to Maryland with a 3-0 loss to the Goucher College Gophers at Beldon Field on Sunday afternoon.

The loss evens the Pioneers' record at 1-1 on the year while the Gophers improve to 1-1 on the young season.

The Transylvania offense was stifled throughout the day as Goucher's defense held the Pioneers without a shot in the first half and allowed just two Pioneer shot attempts in the game.

The Pioneers responded with some active defensive play of their own, leading to a 0-0 score at the halftime break.

The Gophers came to life offensively in the second half, forcing five shots in the third quarter. However, Transylvania's defensive line continued to bend but not break, and the game remained scoreless at the end of three quarters of play.

Then moments into the fourth quarter, Goucher broke through with the game's first goal. The Gophers went on to add two additional scores over the final five minutes of play, pushing the final score to 3-0 in favor of the home team.

Transylvania goalkeeper Sidney Varney collected a career-high three saves in the loss on Sunday.

The Pioneers will now return to Lexington to open the home portion of their schedule with a matchup against the Wooster College Fighting Scots on Saturday, September 7. The game is set for a 12 Noon start at Pat Deacon Stadium.
