Conway, Ark. – A comeback bid by the Transylvania field hockey team fell short as the Pioneers wrapped up a weekend conference trip with a 3-1 defeat to the Hendrix College Warriors on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Turf.
Transylvania dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in Southern Athletic Association play while the Warriors improved to 2-6 overall, and 1-1 in SAA play.
The first half was evenly waged between the Warriors and Pioneers as each team mustered seven shots apiece. Each team took turns feeling out one another before Hendrix's Holly Heeb found a seam in the Pioneers net to score in the 13th minute for a 1-0 lead. Heeb's goal would constitute all of the first half scoring as both team's goalies went to work after the score.
Transylvania found new life to start the first half as sophomore midfielder Audrey Denham scored the tying goal eight minutes into the second half to even the match at 1-1. The goal was Denham's first of the season.
But Hendrix grew more aggressive on the counterattack in the following minutes and Heeb put the Warriors ahead once again on her second goal of the day in the 58th minute for a 2-1 lead. Heeb completed a hat-trick in the final minutes of the match as the Warrior knocked in a goal amidst heavy traffic on a quick-developing play near the goal for the 3-1 final.
Senior goalie Allyson Benz came up with 13 saves, nine of which were in the second half.
The Pioneers return to play on Sunday, October 7 as they host the DePauw University Tigers at Pat Deacon Stadium. The match is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start.
