Transy's Beck Athletic and Recreation Center

Constructed in 2002, the Clive M. Beck Center serves as home to Transylvania’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and cheer and dance teams.

The 97,000-square foot Georgian-style building which sits at the corner of Fourth and Broadway in downtown Lexington serves as the geographical centerpiece of the Transylvania campus.

The four-story building houses two full-court gymnasiums, a full-scale fitness center, an indoor running track, batting cages for baseball and softball, a dance and aerobics center, classrooms and lab rooms, athletic administration offices and conference rooms, and Hall of Fame spaces.

The Beck Center opened in 2002, a significant time in the history of Transylvania athletics as the school was transitioning from the NAIA to the NCAA Division III classification, joining the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference as its ninth member at the time.

The building’s innovative design allows for an array of activities to be held simultaneously. Varsity games are held in the lower performance gym while practices, camps, and other events may take place in the upper gym, fitness center, indoor track, and auxillary rooms.

On the bottom floor of the Beck Center lays Don Lane Court, (capacity 1,200) named for Transylvania’s legendary men’s basketball coach who coached the program to 509 wins from 1976 through 2001. In its 15 years of existence, the facility has played host to NCAA Tournament events, conference championships, presidential campaign rallies, regional high school all-star games, hundreds of youth sport camps, and a variety of regional sporting events.

Outside of live game events on the performance gym floor, Don Lane Court can be reconfigured into two separate practice courts for camp environments, expanded for banquets, competitions, and large-scale practices. The performance gym level holds eight team locker rooms.

Adjacent to the south end of the court is a full-service Sports Medicine facility that houses the home offices for the Transylvania Sports Medicine staff. An enclosed athletic training room is open during class hours and through the end of practices and game events for student-athletes to receive treatment and rehabilitation throughout the day in order to return to competition.

The Sports medicine facility at the Beck Center is one of two on campus and is centrally located, allowing for ease of access for student-athletes during their daily schedules. Other amenities at the Beck Center athletic training facility include six treatment tables, five taping tables, state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment and modalities, a wet room featuring a whirlpool for ice baths and cryotherapy, ultrasound machines and stem units. The facility’s proximity to the performance gym also allows sports-specific rehab in wide spaces.

The main floor of the Beck Center sits one floor above the performance gym. Fans enter the concourse at this level within an atrium that extends to the roofline. From this level, a view of Don Lane Court is offered of the 1,200 seat gymnasium. The concourse level includes the White, Greer, Maggard Orthodontics room, a multi-purpose room which can be used for seminars, meetings, press conferences, and other group events, the Pioneer Hall of Fame Room which overlooks Don Lane Court from the east sideline, and the main Transylvania athletic offices.

The Beck Center is named in honor of the late son of Transylvania Board of Trustees member Graham J. Beck and his wife, Rhona, whose generous lead gift helped to make the project a reality. They were joined in support by many other board members, along with alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the University.
