The Transylvania baseball team will Whitaker Bank Ballpark its new home venue in the 2020 season.

The Pioneer baseball team practices at and plays its home games at the stadium owned by the [JS1] Class-A Lexington Legends baseball team on Broadway. Located one mile from the Transylvania campus in downtown Lexington, the 6,994-seat stadium will serve as the official home ballpark for the NCAA Division III program.

“We have enjoyed our partnership with Transylvania University and the Transy baseball team for many years,” says Lexington Legends President and Chief Executive Officer Andy Shea. “This new, expanded partnership is something we have coveted for years and are now thrilled it has come to fruition. Our values to the community and the baseball industry, coupled with the close geographic proximity make this partnership a no-brainer. As we go into our 20th season at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in 2020, we take tremendous pride in our facilities and property, both of which we are excited to share with Transylvania as we move forward.”

“We are beyond excited to partner with the Legends,” adds Transylvania Vice President for Athletics, Dr. Holly Sheilley. “Their commitment to community and excellence aligns perfectly with our values. Our student-athletes’ and fans’ experience will be elevated with this unique opportunity to compete at a minor league park.

Over the past two decades, the Pioneer baseball team has played the majority of its games at Marquard Field, located three miles north of campus off I-75. The Pioneers have contested a select amount of home games at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, where the Legends play from April through September as a member of the South Atlantic League.

Last season, one of the major highlights for the Pioneers came when they hosted a three-game series against Thomas More University. Transylvania also played against Otterbein University at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in the 2018 season and has played multi-game conference series at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in prior seasons.

With the new agreement between Transylvania and the Lexington Legends, the Pioneers will play all 23 of its scheduled regular-season home games in 2020 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

The new home for the Pioneers provides the Transylvania baseball team with an array of new opportunities and logistical enhancements. The geographical proximity of Whitaker Bank Ballpark to Transylvania significantly reduces travel time for Pioneer student-athletes to and from games and practices. At the ballpark, below-ground dugouts, professional-league standard batting cages, and locker room access are all-new amenities for the Transylvania baseball student-athletes.

The move to Whitaker Bank Ballpark offers new additions to the Transylvania baseball fan experience. Expanded stadium seating extending from home plate down the first and third-base lines will allow every Pioneer fan to receive an up-close look at the Pioneers with their preferred viewing angles while 26 luxury suites are also available for usage, offering another elite experience for Pioneer fans and friends. In-stadium restrooms, concession stands, and a home-plate view press box towards the upper level of the stadium are all new features entailed with the migration of the Pioneer baseball team to Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

The move to one of Lexington’s enduring sports landmarks vaults the Pioneers into a stratosphere of having one of the premier and most populous ballparks among their Division III peers.
