Tempe, Ariz. – Freshman Elizabeth Moore wrote history for the Transylvania triathlon team at the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships, finishing as the individual national runner-up in the Division III triathlon race held at the Tempe Town Lake Course near Arizona State University.

Making its inaugural foray into the national championship, the first-year Transylvania triathlon program witnessed tremendous results from Moore, who finished in second place among all Division III triathletes, along with senior Shelbi Poehlein, who took 11th place in the Division III race to cap off a stellar year of growth in her first year as a triathlete.

Sunday's national championship race consisted of a 750-meter swim, followed by a 20-meter kilometer bike, and finally a 5-kilometer run. For the first time since the introduction of collegiate women's triathlon in 2014, the championship races were segmented in two waves, with Division I and Division II programs competing in one race, and Division III and college club programs competing in the other race.

Moore crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 10 minutes, and 53 seconds, finishing 56 seconds behind North Central College's Katherine Canfield, who took the individual national championship. Sunday's second-place finish by Moore marked the fourth time in six races this season in which Moore has recorded a top-two individual finish.

The national championship race wrapped up the 2018 inaugural triathlon season for Transylvania.

Triathlon was approved as an NCAA Emerging Sport for Women in January of 2014, and the first varsity National Championships were held in the fall of that year. The sport has a 10-year window to demonstrate sustainability at the NCAA level. Transylvania was one of seven new programs to enter varsity collegiate triathlon in 2018 and the first in both the state of Kentucky at any NCAA level as well as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
