Orlando, Fla. – The Transylvania men's and women's tennis teams captured a pair of 6-3 victories over the Ursinus College Bears at the Lake Cane Tennis Center on Monday morning.
The victory was the second in as many days for the men's team while the women's team captured their first victory under first-year head coach Bill Carey.
"I was thoroughly impressed with how our team competed today," remarked Carey. "From top to bottom they came out with great energy and maintained it throughout the entire match. We came from behind in the No. 2 doubles match to force a tiebreak and just gutted out what proved to be an absolutely huge point. The fact that Reagan came back again from behind at No. 5 singles and won another tiebreak is just evidence of how mentally strong this team was all day. It was a really great way for me to get my first win as a Pio and with this team, I am sure that it is just the first of many!"
In the women's match, the team of Porsche Robinson and Jessica Burton claimed the victory in No. 1 doubles play after their opponents from Ursinus were forced to retire. In the No. 2 doubles match, Alyssa Igyarto and Reagan Jobe battled to a thrilling 8-7 (10-8) victory.
With the 2-1 lead in hand, the Pioneers rolled to the 6-3 overall victory with wins from Robinson, Burton, Igyarto, and Jobe in the No. 1, 2, 3, and 5 singles matches respectively. Jobe provided the Pioneers with a thrilling come-from-behind 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) victory.
Transylvania jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Ursinus in the men's match thanks to a dominant 8-0 victory in the No. 1 doubles match, followed by an 8-5 victory by the duo of Nick McNamee and Noah McNamee in No. 2 doubles play.
The Pioneers went on to close out the 6-3 match victory with four straight wins in singles play. Transylvania's slimmest margin of victory came in the No. 2 singles match as Hugo Kouhkna prevailed 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4). Kouhkna has now won four straight singles matches as well as four straight doubles matches.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, March 13. The men's team will face the Wheaton (Ill.) College Thunder while the women's team will match up with the Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels. The men's match will take place at 10:30 a.m. followed by the women's match at noon. Both matches will be played at Sanlando Park in Orlando.
