Transylvania tennis starts out spring break trip down south with men's victory over Piedmont

Orlando, Fla. – The Transylvania men's and women's tennis teams opened their spring break trip to Florida with a pair of matches against the Piedmont University Lions at the USTA National Campus on Sunday morning.

The men's tennis team picked up a hard-fought 6-3 win, the team's first victory of the season, while the women's team fell to the Lions by the score of 7-2.

In the men's match, the Pioneers jumped out to a commanding 2-1 lead after doubles play thanks to an 8-4 victory from Hugo Kouhkna and Arjun Gupta in the No. 1 doubles match and an 8-3 victory secured by Nick McNamee and Noah McNamee in the No. 2 doubles match.

The Pioneers kept the momentum going in singles play as the Pioneers swept the first four matches. Kouhkna came from behind to win 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 in No. 1 singles play, while Gupta claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 singles matchup.

Nick McNamee also came back after dropping the first set of his No. 3 singles match to claim a thrilling 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-5) victory. Noah McNamee captured the Pioneers' third three-set victory of the day, a 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 (10-5) victory in the No. 4 singles match.

Although the Lions took the last two singles matches, the Pioneers were still able to claim the overall 6-3 match victory.

"I'm so proud of and happy for my team," remarked Transylvania men's tennis head coach Kevin Calhoun. "They played with their hearts today and played confidently in the biggest moments. It's fulfilling to coach a team that cares as this one does."

In the women's match, Transylvania fell behind 2-1 after doubles play with the Pioneers' lone victory coming in the No. 1 doubles match via an 8-4 win by Porsche Robinson and Jessica Burton.

After a 6-3, 6-1 victory by Robinson in the No, 1 singles matchup, the Lions went on to sweep the next five singles matches to claim the 7-2 match victory over Transylvania.

The Pioneers return to action tomorrow morning, March 11 as they face off with the Ursinus College Bears. The Pioneers and the Bears will begin play at 11:00 a.m. at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando.
