Transylvania women's soccer returns to HCAC playoffs for first time since 2015 with thrilling finish

Final score

Lexington, Ky. – Freshman midfielder Annie Stauffer buried a penalty kick in double overtime, leading the Transylvania women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin' Engineers at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The victory propels the Pioneers into the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament for the first time since the 2015 season. Transylvania will be the No. 3 seed in next week's tournament.

Transylvania sent a barrage of shots towards the Rose-Hulman goal early in the game but it was the Fightin' Engineers that struck first with a goal from Alyssa Taylor in the 22nd minute.

Although the Pioneers had numerous offensive opportunities, the Rose-Hulman defense held strong and the score remained 1-0 at the half.

With the time on the clock dwindling, the Pioneers made their move as freshman forward Ashley Chindo drove the ball into the left side of the box and blasted a shot past the diving Rose-Hulman goalie to level the score at 1-1 with just 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

In the first overtime period, neither team was able to create a serious offensive threat as the Pioneers and Engineers combined for just three shots, none of which were on frame.

Then, in the 104th minute, the Fightin' Engineers were shown a red card in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Pioneers.

Stauffer was entrusted with the game-clinching opportunity and placed her shot just left of the Rose-Hulman goalie, clinching the victory and a trip to the postseason for Transylvania.

With the win, the Pioneers wrap up the regular season with an overall record of 13-4-2 and 6-2-1 in HCAC play, while the Fightin' Engineers fall to 10-8 and 5-2 in conference play.

The Pioneers will now travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to face the No. 2 seed Mount St. Joseph Lions on Wednesday, October 31 in the HCAC semifinals. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. start at the Mount Sports Complex.
