Maryville, Tenn. – Freshman forward Ashley Chindo scored her third goal of the season and the Transylvania women's soccer team defeated the Maryville College Scots by the final score of 1-0 at MC Soccer Field on Wednesday night.
The Pioneers improve to 6-2 with the victory, matching last season's win total, while the Scots fall to 3-3 on the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Morgan Patton, the reigning Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, turned in a spectacular performance in goal for the Pioneers, recording 11 saves while not allowing a Maryville goal en route to the Pioneers' 6th shutout of the season.
The Scots burst out of the gate firing, recording eight consecutive shots to begin the game. However, Transylvania responded with a pair of quality shot attempts from freshman midfielder Abby Baker.
Then, in the 26th minute, the Pioneers broke through for the lone score of the game as Chindo intercepted a Maryville pass and sent a high-arching shot over the head of the diving Scots' goalkeeper to put Transylvania ahead 1-0, a lead that would hold throughout the rest of the game.
In the second half, Maryville increased the pressure on Transylvania's defensive line as the Scots sought after an equalizer. Although the Pioneers were outshot 10-3 in the period they refused to yield a goal, preserving the 1-0 victory.
Up next for the Pioneers is a matchup with the Webster University Gorloks on Saturday, September 22. First touch between the Pioneers and the Gorloks is set for 12:00 p.m. at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
