Moir, Pioneers women’s golf lead HCAC championships after first round at Liberty Country Club

Moir swinging with scores

Liberty, Ind. – The Transylvania women's golf team took the first step in defending its conference title in the first round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women's golf championships on Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Country Club.

Two-time defending individual champion, senior Meredith Moir, once again set the pace for the 47-player field on Saturday, firing a round-best three-over-par 73 to finish the afternoon in first place.

Moir received plenty of help from her teammates, all four of which competed along with Moir in last season's HCAC championships, in Saturday's first of two rounds hosted by HCAC member Earlham College.

Junior Rachel Fine carded a four-over-par 74 to finish the day in second place on the individual leaderboard. Junior Rebecca Fine joined her two teammates in the top-10 with a round-one 81 to reach the halfway point of the tournament in seventh place.

Senior Jenna Soderling scored a round-one 85 to finish the day in a tie for 10th place while junior Lexie Lamar tallied an 86 to finish the day in a share of 13th.

The Pioneers completed the first round with a score of 313 to finish atop the team leaderboard with one round remaining on Sunday. They lead second-place Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology by 13 strokes, and third-place Mount St. Joseph University by 38 strokes.

Transylvania is aiming for its first back-to-back conference championships in program history. The winner of the HCAC tournament will be awarded the conference's automatic qualifying bid into next spring's NCAA women's golf national championships in Houston, Texas at Bay Oaks Country Club. Last year, the Pioneers defeated second-place Rose-Hulman by 18 strokes to clinch the team championship at Transylvania's home course Keene Run Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky.

All 10 participating teams are slated to tee off at approximately 9:00 a.m. from Liberty for the second round of the tournament to determine the HCAC champion.
