Liberty, Ind. – Senior Meredith Moir topped the individual leaderboard and the Transylvania women's golf team did the same for the team leaderboard in Saturday's first round of the Earlham College Fall Invitational tournament at Liberty Country Club.
Joining nine other teams on the Liberty C.C. links including eight other teams from the HCAC, the Pioneers shot a round-best team score of 321 to finish the first of two rounds atop the team leaderboard and eight strokes ahead of second-place Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
The fingerprints of multiple Pioneer golfers were all over the top-10 of the 60-player individual leaderboard, led by Moir, who carded a six-over par 76 to lead all players. Moir's first round set a high bar as she ended the day five strokes ahead of one teammate, junior Rachel Fine and Rose-Hulman's Lauren Conley, who each fired an 81 to finish the first round in a tie for second place.
Juniors Lexie Lamar and Rebecca Fine each had strong days, completing the first round in a tie for fourth-place, one stroke back of Fine and Coverstone after shooting identical scores of 82. Senior Jenna Soderling finished just outside the top-10 with an 84 to check in at 12th place.
In addition to topping the individual leaderboard, Moir led all players on Saturday in birdies with three total. Moir and Rachel Fine each paced the field with 10 pars apiece.
The two-day tournament offers HCAC teams their first look at the site of next month's HCAC Championships, which awards the winning team the automatic conference bid into the 2019 NCAA National Championships in Houston, Texas. The Pioneers are the defending champions and are aiming for their second straight trip to the NCAA championships.
