Transylvania women use 17-0 start to cruise to victory at Spalding

Louisville, Ky. – The Transylvania women's basketball team won its final road game of the 2018 calendar year, cruising to an 84-58 win over the Spalding University Golden Eagles on Wednesday night at Columbia Gym.

The Pioneers shellshocked the host Golden Eagles by beginning the night on a 17-0 run, holding the home team scoreless for nearly seven minutes to start the evening as they collected a wire-to-wire win, their seventh of the season. Transylvania now stands at 7-2 on the year while Spalding drops to 6-4.

Entering the night 31 points away from the 1,000-point career scoring mark, senior guard Celia Kline carried the scoring load for Transylvania, leading the way with 16 points including the first five points of the night.

Junior guard Ashton Woodard knocked down a three-pointer at the 7:10 mark of the first quarter to put the Pioneers up 8-0, followed by a three-point play by sophomore center Elizabeth Hardiman.

The Pioneers continued to attack the rack as Hardiman, sophomore guard Zenoviah Walker, and sophomore center Miranda Otero each scored inside to complete the 17-0 run. Concurrently, the Golden Eagles missed their first 11 field goals of the night before Maleah Hirn scored a pair of free throws at the 3:08 mark of the first quarter.

Transylvania would go on to outscore Spalding 24-8 in the first quarter and responded with an equally powerful second quarter to take a 49-20 lead to the break.

The Pioneers buried 11 of 28 three-pointers on the night while Spalding shot 4 for 18 from outside. Transylvania utilized crisp ball movement all night, amassing 18 assists to Spalding's 10.

Woodard added 13 points for the Pioneers, hitting 6 of 7 shots from the foul line and added four assists and two rebounds. Junior forward Shelby Boyle added nine points, nine rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and one steal. Otero finished the night with eight points, nine rebounds, and two blocks.

The Pioneers are next in action on December 28 as they open up the 2018 Pat Deacon Classic from the Beck Center. Transylvania will take on Methodist at 7:00 p.m. in the four-team bracket-style tournament which also includes Trine and Wisconsin-Whitewater.
