Pioneers tennis bested in pair of midweek matches in Orlando

Altamonte Springs, Fla. – The Transylvania men's and women's tennis teams continued their spring break trip in Florida with a pair of matches against the Wheaton College Thunder and the Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels at Sanlando Park on Wednesday morning.

The Transylvania men's team jumped out to an early 2-1 lead over Wheaton following doubles play.

The team of Hugo Kouhkna and Arjun Gupta picked up an 8-6 victory in the No. 1 doubles match followed by a thrilling 8-7 (7-5) victory for the team of Nick McNamee and Noah McNamee in No. 2 doubles play.

However, the Thunder went on to sweep all six singles matches to claim the 7-2 overall match victory over Transylvania.

In the women's match, the Pioneers fell behind early after getting swept in all three doubles matches.

The Pioneers bounced back early in singles play with a 6-2, 0-6 1-0 (10-8) victory by Jessica Burton in the No. 2 singles match.

Transylvania's final victory of the day came via Merrick Irwin, who claimed a 6-4, 6-1 victory in No. 3 singles action.

Oglethorpe responded by taking the final three singles matches with relative ease to capture the 7-2 overall match victory.

The Pioneers will take tomorrow off before returning to the courts on Friday, March 15 for a pair of matches against the University of Northwestern Eagles. Both matches are set for 8:00 a.m. starts at the USTA in Orlando.
