LEXINGTON, Ky.—It was an exciting night at Pat Deacon Stadium, as sophomore Blake Chidester logged three goals in a five minute span for a hat trick to lead the Pioneers to a 6-0 win over Berea College Saturday in the season opener.
Holding a 2-0 lead in the 38th minute, Chidester netted his first goal of the season to extend the Pioneer lead to three as time wound down in the first half, but the Chidester and the offense were not content.
Chidester found the net again less than two minutes later, before receiving a pass from Stephen Willoughby to put the Pioneers up by five at the end of the first half.
The Pioneers were held scoreless in the second half until freshman Wilson Martin found fellow freshman Riley Calhoon for a goal in the 55th minute giving Calhoon his first career goal and sealing the win for Transylvania.
The Pioneer offense was relentless from the start of the match scoring in the fourth minute on a goal from junior Ryan Stallings. Stallings and the Pioneer offense navigated their way through the Berea defense again in the 18th minute as sophomore Ben Rossoll found Stallings for his second goal of the match.
Junior goalkeeper Cody Waltrip earned his first win of the season. Waltrip tallied two saves on two shots on goals in the win.
"There were a few shaky moments for us here and there," head coach Matt Vogel said. "But that is to be expected in your first game and with half of the team being new players. I was impressed with our collected effort as a group and look forward to building on things as the season progresses."
The Pioneers improve to 1-0 on the young season and will face Berry College Sunday at Pat Deacon Stadium. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m.
