Transylvania field hockey grabs first victory of 2017 season with late-goal outburst

Chambersburg, Pa. – The Transylvania field hockey team wound down its trip to the Wilson College Invitational on a high note, scoring twice in the final seven minutes to claim a 2-0 victory against the Ferrum College Panthers Sunday afternoon.

The win gave Transylvania its first victory of the season after being shutout in three close games to start the 2017 campaign.

"Today was another step forward in our season," said Transylvania field hockey head coach Sarah Humphries. "Getting not only our first win of the season but our first goals too is a great boost to our confidence moving forward."

Like its valiant performance one day before in a 1-0 loss to Eastern Mennonite, the Pioneers outshot its opponent on Sunday. But unlike Saturday's result, the Pioneers were rewarded for their ongoing aggressive attack.

In the first half Sunday, the Pioneers outshot Ferrum 12-0, but came up empty on the scoreboard. Concurrently, Transylvania's defense was lights out, holding Ferrum without a shot in the first half to maintain momentum of the contest.

"We know we just need to make that offensive connection sooner in order to get ahead on the play," added Humphries.

Transylvania eventually opened up the lid on scoring with a connection from sophomore midfielder Tori Coleman in the 63rd minute via a setup from senior midfielder Jessica Chandler.

Seemingly emboldened by its newfound offensive breakthrough, Transylvania scored again just minutes later when sophomore forward Zoe Jessie took a feed from fellow sophomore Taylor Insley to deliver Transylvania's second goal in less than three minutes.

"We want to use this momentum moving forward into this week with three games in five days," Humphries said.

Transylvania moved to 1-3 on the season with its first home contest of the season on the horizon. With a win in hand, the Pioneers will host Centre College in its home opener on Wednesday, September 13 at Pat Deacon Stadium. Home dates follow with a Friday night matchup against Converse College at 7:00 p.m., and a home contest versus The College of Wooster next Sunday, September 17.
